The India captain has been sidelined for the first three matches, which begin on January 23 at Wellington. Ajinkya Rahane will replace him in the side for those games, before Virat Kohli returns from his rest period to lead them against Australia later this month.

Rahane has played for India in all three formats. He has scored 1,856 runs at an average of 42.27 in Tests, 2,868 runs at an average of 39.79 in ODIs and 704 runs at an average of 35.43 in T20Is.
Rahane made his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide on December 5, 2013 and scored a century on debut (110). He has since gone onto play 20 Tests with three centuries and four fifties to his name so far.
Rahane also played 93 ODIs for India between 2011-2019 scoring 2 868 runs with seven centuries & 16 fifties during this period as well!
